How to get the greenest lawn in your Ottawa Neighbourhood

If you have a lawn that is brown, dried out and tired looking or if it has areas where there is no grass at all, here's how to get the nicest lawn

The best way to get a green lawn and be the envy of all your neighbours is to give your lawn what it needs most, and it is not water. I have a home that I bought in 2005 and the house was brand new and the builder had a landscaping company put in a beautiful lawn just before we moved in .

I remember sitting on the front step on a nice summer evening enjoying my watering time while I sipped some wine on the front porch. At the time I thought that simply watering the lawn would be enought to get the job done.

After about a year or so the lawn started slowly looking brown, it started getting dandy lions and weeds that no matter how many I removed they still kept coming and coming. No matter how much watering I did nothing seemed to work. Finally one day I decided to knock on a neighbours door because he had the nicest greenest lawn in the neighbourhood. I figured he must be doing something to it to keep it so green.

When I knocked on the door, I introduced myself and commented on how green his lawn was and could he show or tell me how he got such a nice lawn. He said wait a minute and went downstairs for a minute, came back up and showed me a bag of fertilizer of Scotts Fertilizer. He then told me to fertilize your entire lawn with a hand spreader or regular grass seed spreader three times a year for a healthy green weed free lawn.

I couldn't believe that was all it takes to get the greenest lawn, so of course I immediately went to Home Depot and got a huge bag of Scotts Fertilizer for my hungry lawn. Within a week I could start to see a huge difference in the look and health of the lawn.

Needless to say I still love watering the lawn in the summer, while fertilizing the grass three times a year. My lawn is totally green again and I don't feel like someone who neglects his lawn simply from a lack of knowledge.

TIPS: Make sure and Fertilize your lawn in early spring even when the grass does not seem to be growing yet, so you have an early start on the season. Also use an organic Salt in winter to avoid browning along the edge of walkways and patios from winter lawn damage.

Major Tip: Do not cut your grass too low to the ground I use the second notch from the top on my lawn mower as the Grass needs to shade itself. The only downside is you will be cutting your grass or lawn more often, however it will be so much greener looking and healtier in the end.

How to fix Dried and Dead Patches - If your lawn has patches where there is no lawn you can fix and repair the area and create a healthy mix of the following secret ingredients:

  • Cut out and dig down the area that needs to be repaired by about three or four inches
  • Black Earth - Buy the required amount of black earth to cover the area to the surface and mix it
  • Add sheep manure to the mix with the soil
  • Add some peat moss to the mixture of soil and manure
  • Add a good brand of Fertilizer like Scotts brand to the soil mixture
  • Add a good quality seed like Scotts brand Seed
  • Mix everything together in a wheelbarrow
  • Add some water to the mix making the soil damp and wet enough to get rid of all dry soil
  • Once the mixture is done place it in the patch area
  • Finish the job by sprinkling more grass seed on the top of the soil
  • Keep the soil mixture wet by watering it daily with a nice spray mist especially once it starts to grow out of the surface of the soil
